First, for those who do not know, and it is really okay if you don’t…there is not a test and the goons will not be showing up at your house to take you away to some Neo-con detention center, but for those of you who do not know:

Socialism: a theory or system of social organization that advocates the vesting of the ownership and control of the means of production and distribution, of capital, land, etc., in the community as a whole.

In a nutshell that means that everyone gets along and makes collective decisions about everything.  Everyone owns everything and shares everything.  This theory is marked by the phrase from our buddy Karl Marx: From each according to his abilities, to each according to his need.

Now, I am not here to explain it or argue against it perse’, or even give any sort of Op’ed piece on the outlook of America.  I only offer a question and my observation as an answer.

When is the last time you managed to drive through road construction and everyone smoothly, collectively, and socially drive as one?  Never.  Everyone is out for themselves.  They force their way to the front, they don’t wait in line, they assume you are going to do for them while they selfishly do the exact opposite of socially-hive-community conscious efficient driving.  You also tend to respond to this in various degrees of selfish behavior.  You block them, refuse to create space and let them in, drive bumper-to-bumper leaving only inches for safety between you and the next car…almost daring the person merging to push their way in.

And that my friends is the point.  We are selfish creatures.  We can’t drive as one, what makes anyone in Washington, Paris, Moscow or Beijing think we will ever act as one and live as one.  It is a great theory…all of man owning and living on the land.  Owning the factories and sharing the spoils.  But it is a pipe dream.  We can’t drive through a construction zone, past an accident, in rush-hour traffic, or even to the corner store to buy a beer as a single social consciousness…there is no way we will ever govern like that.

Because sooner or later we, or some other human will be selfish.  It is our nature.
